Streets of Barcelona

The streets are somehow different every place you go.

The way people interact with them is different too. In Europe people don’t simply move through them. They live in them, they inhabit them. The spaces themselves seem infused not with a consumerism but with life. People seem to just be in them. To sit, to stand, to talk in the world. Not simply as an access from A to B or from shop to shop.

I wondered about this while recently in Barcelona. Is it the lack of money and jobs? Or is it cultural? Are the streets themselves set up in a way that invites this? And are we losing our public spaces in Australia? Did we ever really have any? Questions, always questions when you are travelling. I think of Federation Square in Melbourne and wonder why there’s not more places like it.
